Striped bass are also called stripers, white bass, and silver bass. Stripers are comfortable in both salt and fresh water. They are often found near fast moving deep water. Dams and bridges are places where striped bass use man made structures that accelerate the current to get more oxygen and to gain advantage over prey. They congregate at springs and dams in spawning season as they seek to go upstream to find source springs where the water temperature is constant.

Striped bass can be caught with the same type of baits as largemouth bass. Stripers are more timid and harder to catch than largemouth. Many fisherman use deep-water lures like heavy jigs and deep diving crankbaits to catch them near bridges and dams. Small stripers will use sandbars to ambush baitfish.

Stripers can be raised in ponds, and are commercially farmed for food in some western states. Most striper hatcheries in Florida farm for the purpose of replenishing the wild stock of striped bass that is diminished by dams, pollution, and boat traffic. The efforts of these hatcheries supports conservation of nature, and also helps the fishing and tourism industry of Florida.
