Beginner Fly Fishing for Bluegill

For still water fishing in small ponds with light gear you want to use a fly that mimics a natural prey item near the pond that the bream and bass would feed on. In the video below, the fisherman is at a small still water pond in Florida where there are plenty of dragonflies hovering around the water surface. The fly was presented lightly onto the surface of calm water, as if it had landed naturally, and the bluegill attacked the dragonfly as soon as it twitched. Using polarized sunglasses, the fisherman can observe the bluegill stalking the dragonfly lure underwater. Only the slightest twitch on the line is needed to make a small ripple around the fly. Many times a single twitch is enough to convince a fish that the fly is real and should be eaten. If not try two or three slight twitches. When you are ready to try a new spot then pull in the fly line with faster upward pulls to keep your fly near the surface to give the fish every chance to eat it if they want to. Chances are if they didn't move towards the fly to investigate when it landed they aren't interested or they know your fly is fake.

The dragonfly fly lure in this video was handmade with no vice or special equipment. It is made of cushion foam, thread, plastic bag, a feather, and a hook.

As far as how to use the flies, different fly patterns call for different presentations. Flys that mimic grasshoppers or crickets should be pulled in short strips to simulate an insect kicking on the surface. Fly fishing lures that look like minnows or baitfish should be pulled in faster and jerked around erratically to look like a darting baitfish.

Some FishObserver contributors have been saltwater and freshwater fly fishing in Florida recently and there are new articles on the way for fly tying and fly fishing strategies.
