Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice for sheepshead fisherman, but fiddlers are also great bait for other fish like snapper and redfish too. The great thing about fiddler crabs is that you can find them along the shore in any salty waterway in Florida. Some people harvest them with a shovel by digging out their burrows, but this is destructive to the environment. It is better to scoop them up in a butterfly net or prod them out of their burrows individually with a stick. They are easy to keep at home as well. They do well in a plastic try with high walls, some sand, marine salt, and de-clorinated water. They are detivores that filter decaying organic material from the sand in the wild. You can feed them flake fish food and/or cut mullet.

Knowing which bait to use for targeting specific fish is key information for fisherman. A knowledgeable fisherman can find preferable bait in the environment without having to spend money at the bait shop. This articles is intended to help fisherman and other fish observers understand patterns and relationships between live baits and fish.
